Go Go Hamsters (or Zhu ZHu Pets) are one of the hottest toys for Christmas 2009!

Despite the recession, the quartet of electronic hamsters has been a massive hit. The cute, little, wheeled rodents zip around a track, go round in a hamster wheel, just like the real thing. But without having to clean a smelly cage each week.

The Go Go Hamsters squeak and have a little computer brains—for example, they make teeth-brushing sounds when they enter their little bathrooms, They are also flying off the shelves and are already selling for well in excess of their original retail price.

Zhu Zhu’s Path to Market

The traditional toy market has been in decline for many years. Video games and electronic gadgets have increasingly been featuring more in kids’ ‘must-have’ lists.

But hamsters are cute and kids love cute. Real hamsters have to be handled gently and need regular care and attention. And although they’re relatively clean creatures, their cages still need to be cleaned regularly. Go Go Hamsters are the perfect substitute. The success of Zhu Zhu Pets, as they are known in the US, shows that with a product that catches the zeigeist, even a small toy company can have a monster hit.

Cepia is the company behind this runaway success.Surprisingly, it’s a seven-year-old outfit baesd in St. Louis, USA.. CEO Russell Hornsby is a veteran of Mattel .

Zhu Zhus were inspired by Hornsby’s own family’s late pet hamster.. The toys were prototypes as recently as last November.

ZHU ZHU PETS TAKE OFF

Toys “R” Us committed to a sizable order and isn’t actively promoting them in the US.. The chain is limiting sales to one per household Stateside.

Wal-Mart received a large shipment in late October and advertised Zhu Zhus in its weekly circular for Sunday, Nov. 8. Some stores put the pets out too early, though, and customers weren’t allowed to purchase them, spurring rumors that Zhu Zhus had been recalled.

IHornsby will be in China for two months in China increasing production of Zhu Zhus to meet demand.. He persuaded the four Chinese producers who make the toys to increase their daily output from 70,000 units to 120,000 units.. Retailers are now paying extra to send the toy hamsters to the States.

But how many children are going to be disappointed this Christmas when Santa doesn’t bring them a Go Go Hamster?
